100 Unique Attitudes in Yunlin Introduction

     Open a shop that gathers interesting souls.

            Over the past few years, I have opened several stores that are very popular
        among young people. Opening a store is seemingly glamorous but it is actually hard
        work. What’s more, hard work doesn’t always reap rewards; it is a matter of money
        and sweat. When friends in the media industry come to interview me, they often ask
        me one question: “How do you open a great store that customers will like? This is
        DFWXDOO\ D TXHVWLRQ WKDW LV DOZD\V RQ P\ PLQG  )URP ZKHQ WKH LGHD RI VWDUWLQJ D VWRUH 
        popped in my mind to every day that I open my store for business, I always ask my-
        self, “Is this a store that is needed?

            In an interview, Masuda Soaki, the president of the bookstore chain Tsutaya, said
        about a store: “It is like a Shinto shrine with works that are a culmination of people’s
        VRXOV ´  0DVXGD  DOVR  QRWHG  WKDW  RSHQLQJ  D  VWRUH  ³LV  WR  FROOHFW  DQG  RႇHU  ZKDW  SHRSOH 
        QHHG  WKURXJK  VFLHQWL¿F  ULJRU  DQG  WR  FRQWLQXH  WR  HQKDQFH  WKH  QHHG  WKURXJK  WKH  SUR -
        cess of running a store.” These words of Masuda resonate with what I have in mind.
        The ideal store does not differentiate between high and low sales items and unit
        SULFHV  EXW UDWKHU RQH WKDW UHVSRQGV WR WKH QHHGV RI LWV FXVWRPHUV VFLHQWL¿FDOO\ DQG 
        continues to respond accurately to the voices of the market. Only then is it a suc-
        cessful store.

            I have visited Yunlin no less than ten times in recent years because of my work
        and invitations from my collaboration partners. Each time I visit, I am struck by the
        IHHOLQJ RI ³$K  LW¶V VR GLႇHUHQW IURP WKH ODVW WLPH , ZDV KHUH  7KH FKDQJH LQ <XQOLQ LV 
        not drastic, but slow and powerful. The speed of change feels well thought out, much
        like “collecting souls” as Masuda said.

            As one of the earliest places in Taiwan to be developed, Yunlin has not had a
        smooth ride. Rather, it has experienced many challenges and hardships that other
        counties have not. It is probably for this reason that the transformation in recent
        years has been particularly meticulous and cautious, because its achievements
